Tom’s Bob Graham Round

Well that's Tom Sabey's Bob Graham round complete, 67 miles, 28,000 feet of ascent and covering 42 of lakelands finest fell tops.

Deciding to have a go at a BG round goes through many phases and is usually quite a long process. Firstly there's the initial deliberation and lots of self assessment before going public with your intent, at which point it all becomes very real. Then there's the hours and hours of training over many months, often covering long hard fell days that are driven by both enjoyment and the ever present self doubt. Then there's the organisation and the logistics of sorting the support crew, pacers, navigators, transport for the crew, feedstations etc. It's a long list, but all must be meticulously planned to provide every advantage and chance of success.

All of the above undoubtedly helps, but at the end of the day it boils down to self motivation and having the mental strength to keep going beyond what is considered normal. Tom Sabey had this in spades! Smiling all the way and driving himself forward at every stage and all without one single complaint. Tom eventually finished in 20 hours and 5 minutes, a full two hours inside of his planned schedule and 4 hours inside the allowed time.

All extreme physical challenges are a true test of character, there's no where to hide and success is always hard earned. Hard physical endurance always brings out the very best in good people.

Family, friends and club support on the day was humbling and overwhelming. Running a BG with such fantastic support from your nearest and dearest is uplifting and makes such a huge difference.

On behalf of everyone involved Tom I would like to sincerely thank you for providing us all with a truly remarkable, inspirational and memorable day, it was an absolute privilege for all concerned to be part of your BG.

Well done Tom Sabey, a fantastic achievement and one that was very well deserved! 👏👏
